Reliable quality, sustained volumes, Competitive pricing, & excellent compliance record have been key factors contributing to the success for the footwear industry in Sri Lanka.

The industry at present employs about 20,000 people direct & indirect includes 7 large export companies 30 medium scale companies & about 3000 small timers. The country produces and extremely diverse range of modern shoes like (canvas & rubber boots, thongs, sports shoes leather shoes etc.) using a variety of raw material.
The Country’s total production capacity can be estimated to be in the range of 20-30 Mn pairs per year. This figure excludes the supply capacity for rubber

thongs which by itself is estimated to be 27-30 Mn as per year.
European Union has granted Sri Lanka Duty free concessions under the GSP+ Scheme to the footwear categories under HS No 6401, 6402, 6403, 6405 till year 2008.
The key advantages enjoyed by the shoe industry is the availability of trained stitching operators, which could greatly facilitate the development of the upper stitching base in Sri Lanka & the local availability of high quality natural rubber including sole crepe. Several shoe manufactures have facilities of producing a variety of moulded rubber soles & some factories are also equipped to manufacture TPR & PVC unit soles.
Sri Lanka is producing shoes to world renowned brand names such as NEXT, Clarks Worthington Soft, Dexter, Dunnes, H.H. Browns. Bata France, Major markets for Sri Lankan footwear are EU, USA & Japan.
