Handloom & Textile Industry
Hand-woven items are unique from other textile products because of the special characteristics they have. Being cotton based, they demonstrate excellent fabric handling properties partly due to its weaving method. Spurred on by governmental support the Sri Lanka handloom industry has flourished in the last few years.

The exports include a wide range of products such as bath and bed linen, table linen, kitchen linen, curtaining and soft toys, all made out of handloom fabric. The major export markets are USA, UK, France, Australia, Netherlands and Japan.
The market is critical, difficult and demanding and the buyers demand very high standards. Designing plays a vital role in this industry. The industry is therefore being developed to meet these challenges.
