Sri Lanka’s apparel export industry has established itself as the leading export industry in the country. Since 1986 apparel has been the number one foreign exchange earner and the largest single employer in the manufacturing sector providing direct employment opportunities for 350,000 people, There are over 800 factories including the factories operating in the export processing zones in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan apparel industry has a successful history of 20 years. This sector is considered to be competitive and based on the current strengths it will not lose its comparative advantages.
Sri Lankan exporters are now making a concerted effort to consolidate their traditional markets and also move up-market by supplying high value added merchandise while vigorously exploring the possibilities of developing new markets.
The most recent total export earnings from apparel was US $ 2.3 billion. A wide range of apparel for men, women, children and babies in the categories of fashion-wear, casual-wear, sports-wear, lingerie, work-wear, rain-wear, swim-wear etc. are being manufactured and exported.

Sri Lanka maintains good working conditions, does not employ child labour and complies with good environmental standards where the WTO regulations are concerned.
